Distribution centers in the Rockaways are mostly self-started by local groups (churches, libraries) or individuals and do not have management or administration.
There will be a volunteer at GSS to let you know which distribution center in the Rockaways most urgently needs the supplies you pick up.
Note that most distribution and volunteer centers close around 4pm because operations are impossible after dark without electricity.
We suggest you make your way home before sunset as well.
You can also see an updated list of distribution centers and their needs here: http://596acres.org/news/rockaway-current-needs/

Food Stamps
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP))
Current SNAP recipient households that have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to the disaster or household misfortune are entitled to a replacement issuance of benefits provided that:
 The household reports the loss within 10 days of the date of the disaster/misfortune;
(In past disasters the state was granted a waiver to extend the 10 day requirement as with Hurricane Irene, seehttp://otda.ny.gov/policy/gis/2011/11DC018.pdf, it is expected that the state will receive the same waiver but there is nothing official yet.)
and
 The household returns a signed and completed form LDSS-2291 “Request for Replacement of Food Purchased with Food Stamp Benefits,” (http://otda.ny.gov/programs/applications/2291.pdf) within 10 days of the date of the reported loss. (If the 10th day falls on a weekend or holiday, a statement received the day after the weekend or holiday is acceptable.) Note: HRA has a special fax line for replacement FS/SNAP requests, for SNAP recipients who lost food due to Hurricane Sandy: 917-693-1111. HRA has asked that requesters include their address, SSN and contact phone number on the form.
It usually is not necessary for households requesting replacement of SNAP benefits due to food loss to provide additional documentation of the disaster or a list of food items lost. The written attestation on the LDSS-2291 regarding the loss to the household and the cost of the items lost usually is sufficient documentation for authorizing the replacement of SNAP benefits to eligible households.
If a household is not eligible for SNAP benefits, the household can obtain financial assistance via an Emergency Assistance Grant at the local Job Center.

Medicaid
Because of Hurricane Sandy, Fee for Service Medicaid is implementing the following processes until the State of Emergency has ended. The State of Emergency will be determined by the Local District and the State.
1. During the State of Emergency, Fee for Service Medicaid will relax prior authorization requirements for the provision of urgent services.
2. Providers will not be required to request authorization to treat enrolled beneficiaries for the provision of urgent services and will be reimbursed accordingly.
3. In the event that telecommunication failures prevent access to the Medicaid Eligibility Verification System, the Medicaid ID card will suffice as eligibility verification. If access to the eMedNY system prevents real time claim adjudication, pharmacies should dispense emergency supplies as necessary.
Questions should be referred to the CSC Call Center at 800-343-9000.
Social Security
List of social security office that are closed or are delayed opening.

Unemployment Insurance Benefits
Claimant Extension Date
The Department of Labor will extend the date of certification of unemployment benefits for individuals impacted by Hurricane Sandy from November 3, 2012 to November 10, 2012. These individuals will need to call 1-888-209-8124 and speak to an agent to receive benefits for the prior week. If you are unable to access a phone to obtain benefits, individuals can visit any of the agency’s career centers.
